Key responsibilities
- Lead all tea purchasing activities at the Colombo tea auction, including tea grading, valuation, supervision & procurement.
- Oversee tea buyers and prepare weekly buying plans as per production requirements.
- Monitor purchases, conduct market analysis and post auction reporting.
- Manage blend allocation, blend optimization, and cost reduction initiatives while maintaining company quality standards.
- Approve prop samples, blend samples, prior to production.
- Monitor tea stocks and inventory utilization to minimize stock holding and demurrage costs.
- Maintain tea bag stock levels in line with forward sales requirements.
- Provide commercial insights to support sales teams in achieving targeted gross profit margins.
- Manage and develop key international customer accounts, including bulk tea business opportunities.
- Drive sales growth by acquiring new customers, managing existing client relationships, and achieving agreed sales targets.
- Coordinate with the Kenya operations team on tea-related matters and provide ongoing support for tea sourcing, quality, and operational requirements. The correct individual may be seconded to Mombasa if required on short term basis.
- Prepare and review market reports, tea performance statistics, and recommend process improvements to enhance operational efficiency.
Candidate profile
- Minimum 8–10 years of experience in tea buying, tea trading, tea exports, or a similar role within the tea industry.
- Sound knowledge of tea grading, valuation, blending, tea auction operations, and international tea markets.
- Proven experience in customer relationship management, business development, and achieving sales targets.
- Strong analytical, negotiation, communication, and leadership skills.
- Excellent commercial acumen with the ability to optimize costs and maximize profitability.
- Ability to work collaboratively with local and international teams, including overseas operations.
- Results-oriented professional with a strong commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
- Degree or professional qualification in tea, agriculture, business management, sales & marketing, or a related discipline will be an added advantage.
