Senior Telecom Power & Energy Specialist / Generator Systems Engineer

Position overview

MSA Telecommunication LTD is seeking an experienced, highly skilled Senior Telecom Power & Energy Specialist to oversee the installation, field maintenance, and system engineering of mission-critical power systems across telecom tower infrastructure in Papua New Guinea. The role encompasses end-to-end expertise in telecom DC power management (Huawei & ZTE rectifiers), multi-brand diesel generator systems (mechanical & control logic), automatic transfer switches (ATS), and hybrid solar-diesel-battery energy solutions.

Key responsibilities & essential duties

DC power plants & rectifier systems

• Commission, configure, and perform diagnostic maintenance on -48V DC power plants, SMU controllers, and power distribution units (PDU).
• Perform specialized programming and hardware servicing for Huawei (ETP series) and ZTE rectifier cabinets.
• Configure low voltage disconnect (LVD1/LVD2) setpoints, current limits, battery temperature compensation, and remote alarms.

Generator set mechanics & operation

• Execute scheduled preventative maintenance, overhauls, and emergency mechanical repairs on diverse diesel generators (Perkins, Cummins, Deutz, Denyo).
• Troubleshoot fuel injection pumps, mechanical/electronic governors, cooling systems, air intake assemblies, and conduct fuel line bleeding.

Automation, controllers & ATS logic

• Program, calibrate, and resolve faults on automatic generator controllers including deep sea electronics (DSE), ComAp, and SmartGen modules.
• Set up automatic transfer switch (ATS) contactors, motorized switches, mains-fail logic, and remote NOC telemetry reporting.

Hybrid energy & solar systems

• Maintain integrated hybrid sites (solar PV + battery storage + diesel generator) to optimize fuel consumption and lower operational carbon footprint.
• Monitor hybrid controller parameters, MPPT solar charge controllers, and cycle-charging routines for maximum site uptime.

Battery energy storage systems

• Inspect, capacity-test, and balance VRLA, gel, and lithium-ion battery banks to ensure reliable backup runtime.

Technical requirements & qualifications

Education & certs

• Diploma or bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or telecommunication engineering. Valid electrical/mechanic trade license required.

Experience

• Minimum 4+ years of hands-on technical field experience on telecom cell site power setups, DC power plants, and diesel generators.

Rectifier expertise

• Proven expertise in configuring Huawei (SMU) and ZTE power controllers, rectifier modules, and DC distribution systems.

Genset mechanics

• In-depth mechanical overhaul capability for diesel engine mechanical bodies, fuel systems, and governor setups.

Control & ATS

• Practical programming experience with DSE, ComAp, SmartGen control panels, ATS panels, and fault monitoring integrations.

Work environment

Based at the Port Moresby operational hub with active dispatch to remote cell tower sites across Papua New Guinea. Candidates must be comfortable working in demanding island and highland field environments.
