According to the surveys mentioned in the reports, 44% of respondents know someone who has quit or plans to quit because their employer requires them to work in the office. In addition, one of the surveys found that 24% of workers would be willing to take a 10-20% pay cut to be able to work from home, and 21% would give up some of their vacation time just to be able to work from home. The flexibility that comes with remote working is so important.

In terms of retaining talent, another survey mentioned in the reports found that 79% of respondents would be more loyal to their employer if they had flexible work options. Working remotely not only saves employees and employers money. It also saves the environment!

Cost savings for the employer

A surveys of more than 2,100 telecommuters found that 51% of respondents said they are more productive when working from home. In addition, 95% said their productivity was higher or remained the same while working from home. Reasons for increased productivity from remote working include: fewer interruptions (68%), more time for focused work (63%), a quieter work environment (68%), a more pleasant workplace (66%), and avoiding office conflicts(55%).

Cost savings for remote workers

The second most important benefit of working home, according to respondents to a March-April 2021 surveys, is “cost savings” (75%), right after eliminating the commute (84%). These respondents also estimate they save at least $5,000 per year working remotely, while one in five estimate they save more than $10,000 per year. Overall, it is estimated that people who work from home save an average of $4,000 a year.

Environmental savings

The reports mentioned above points to several other reports detailing how remote work leads to environmental savings. One report states that 3.9 million employees who work at least half their hours from home are estimated to save as many greenhouse gas emissions as if they took more than 600,000 cars off the road for an entire year. In addition, it is estimated that nearly 36.2 million Americans could work from home by 2025, reducing commuter miles by 70 to 140 billion per year. In addition, telecommuters who go green (e.g., use less paper and electricity) have the same potential impact on air quality as planting an entire forest of 91 million trees.

03.remote work improves mental health and increases job satisfaction

For workers, telecommuting typically leads to improved mental health and higher job satisfaction.70% of respondents say that permanent remote work would have a significant improvement/positive impact on their mental health. Those respondents with flexible work options say their work-life balance is excellent or very good (48%) and they also have the emotional support they need at work (54%), compared to those without flexible work options (36% and 45%).

Those working remotely reported a Workforce Happiness Index score of 75 out of 100, compared to 71 out of 100 for in-office employees. The same survey also found that remote employees were more likely to report being satisfied with their jobs (57%) than office-based workers (50%).
