Language and cultural facilitators (LCFs) – intermittent multiple positions in Sinhala and Tamil
Background
Sinhala and Tamil language and cross-cultural facilitators (LCFs) prepare volunteers for work and life in Sri Lanka. Prior to service, peace corps trainees (PCTs) participate in a 3-month pre-service training (PST) program providing intensive language, culture, and technical training. LCFs will participate in a 3-week training of trainers and teach language and culture to PCTs during PST for 3 months, working 5-6 days a week. LCFs may also be hired for shorter contract periods throughout the year to support ongoing language training of peace corps volunteers.
Key roles and responsibilities
- Pre-service training preparation
- Facilitate language and cultural learning
- Support and assess PCTs’ language learning, cultural adaptation & community integration
- Support training activities
Duty station, logistics & level of effort
- Duty station is the peace corps training site in Horana/Bulathsinghala. The position requires living at the PST site for up to 12 weeks with a host family. Food and lodging will be provided by the peace corps for those assigned to villages different than their current place of residence.
- The contractor performs full-time, 45 hours per week; normally Monday through Saturday though some evening, Sunday, or holiday work may be required. Staff may be required to be on-call or occasionally work extra hours.
- Position requires approximately 50% local travel.
Minimum requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in English language teaching – e.g. TESL, TEFL, HNDE
- Fluency in English (written and spoken) and in Sinhala and/or Tamil.
- Ability to type in Sinhala and/or Tamil.
- Basic computer literacy includes MS office applications, typing and internet usage.
- Experience living and working in a rural setting and strong willingness to do so for the full duration of the training.
- Willingness to learn and utilize new approaches and skills.
- Willingness to work flexible hours.
- Energetic, motivated, and eager to learn.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively; strong interpersonal skills for engaging with trainees and trainers.
- Willingness to provide constructive feedback and consistently uphold organizational policies consistently.
Preferred qualifications
- Residents of north/north central provinces
- Academic background in language studies such as linguistics, adult language instruction, CELTA, and the Cambridge teaching knowledge test (TKT).
- At least one year teaching or tutoring experience.
- At least one year experience in adult education.
- Experience facilitating discussions or teaching sessions on online platforms.
- At least one year experience working in an intercultural environment.
- Experience engaging in volunteer activities.
- Experience in developing training materials and curricula.
