5 Tips To Be More Confident in Your Job Search
Whether you’re anxiously waiting for that big interview or nervously checking your inbox for news of a submitted application, it’s normal to have those butterflies in your stomach when you’re looking for a new job.
Rest assured, nervousness is normal when job hunting. But if you can keep the butterflies at bay, you’ll be on your way to success. Here are five tips on how to become more confident in your job search.
1.Know what you want
Job search confidence starts long before you meet with a recruiter. In fact, developing that confidence starts before you even send out your first job application.
Before you send off your CV, take the time to think carefully about what you want in your next career move. Do you want more flexibility? Aim for a management position? A complete career change? What kind of tasks do you want to be responsible for and what are you looking for in terms of company culture?
If you know exactly what you want, you can look around more confidently among the open positions – and you will know when you have found something suitable. Remember that it is not only the employer who is looking for a suitable job, you also have to find the right job for yourself.
2.Understand your qualifications
Nothing gives you more confidence than knowing exactly what you bring to the table. So sit down and list your key skills and qualities that every employer values, along with a ‘success sheet’ that lists your results, awards, and other achievements in your career.
Of course, you need to tailor your CV and cover letter to the job and its requirements. However, thinking about your core competencies and developing your personal value proposition will remind you that you are a highly skilled job seeker.
3.Get help
Getting help from others and leaning on your network can help you build your confidence.
For example, you can have a close friend or someone in your network read through your CV and cover letter before you send it off. This can help you make sure you are submitting your best documents.
Or you can contact an experienced career coach to help you revise your CV, practice for interviews, and provide advice and support throughout your job search.
4.Focus on preparation
Before you attend a phone screening or interview, make sure you have researched the company (and your interviewer!) and have a solid idea of what the job entails. Prepare some questions to ask so that at the end of the interview you can show that you are very interested in the recruitment process.
It will take a little more time to prepare. But it is better to be over-prepared than under-prepared it will give you the confidence you need to really shine.
5.Put it in perspective
In most cases, the worst-case scenario is that you don’t get the job – while this may be disappointing, it doesn’t mean you’re worse off than before. If you take a step back and give yourself perspective when things feel difficult, you will realize that the situation is usually not as bad as it seems. Realizing this will give you extra confidence as you continue your job search.
Believe in yourself
By taking these five tips to heart and being positive about the process, you can approach every application and interview with an extra dose of confidence. Believing in your abilities and what you bring to the table as an employee will give you the strength and conviction to get through whatever your job search may entail.
