4 Signs You Should Change Your Job

We’ve all been there. We know the feeling of dread, fighting traffic on the way to and from work. The sleep deprivation on Sunday night while you’re trying to figure out how to get through the next day’s work. Constantly wishing you were doing something else, anything else….

…and yet never being one hundred percent sure that you should quit your job and find something else. After all, the other people at work seem happy. They earn decent money and have a roof over their heads because of that job.

Now I’m going to give you the four simple signs that you should look for a better job. But first, there is one additional telltale sign: If you’re reading this article and have gotten this far, you probably deserve a better job. The fact that you’re reading this tells me that some part of you knows you can do better.

Still, just for fun, let’s go over the four telltale signs that you should be looking for a better job:
You’re doing what you “should” be doing

Ever feel like you’re constantly doing things you “should” be doing instead of what you want to do? If the real reason you’re working is to appease your parents, impress your friends, or do what you think your great-great-grandfather would have wanted you to do, then you’re not being true to yourself, and you’ll eventually snap. It’s time to tune into what you want in life and take steps today to pursue it.

You’re incredibly bored at work

There’s a difference between an occasional boring task during an otherwise enjoyable work week and a job that bores you completely. If you’re dreaming of better things to do to escape boredom, it’s time to make those dreams come true.

Your work colleagues drag you down

The people around us have a huge impact on our lives, often much more than we realize. So if you’re not getting along with your team, picking up bad habits from your colleagues, or just can’t wait to get away from them … that’s a pretty good sign that the grass is greener elsewhere.

You say “no” to this question too many days in a row

Here’s the really big, final, and crucial sign. It’s from Steve Jobs’ famous Stanford commencement speech, and it goes like this: “When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like this: “If you live every day like it’s your last, one day you’ll definitely be right.” That made an impression on me, and every morning since then, for 33 years, I’ve looked in the mirror and asked myself, “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I’m going to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “no” for too many days in a row, I know I need to make a change.” Powerful, isn’t it?

Your next steps…

These signs may have helped you come to terms with the fact that it’s time for a change. But as you probably know, figuring that out is easy. The much harder part is getting the clarity on what to do and the courage to do it.

These are extensive topics that I won’t go into here, but I’ll leave you with two of my favorite guiding questions to help you get started:

  • If you knew you only had 5 years to live, what would you do?
  • If you had an endless supply of money, what would you do?
  • If you need help figuring that out, come to Work It Daily!
